Tequila Johnson

Tequila Johnson is the Co-Founder and President of The Equity Alliance, a Tennessee-based grassroots non-profit that equips citizens with tools and strategies to engage in the civic process. Through her involvement in local politics and community organizing, Tequila is a strong champion of equality for ethnic minority communities. In 2018, she served as the statewide manager for the Tennessee Black Voter Project, a coalition of two dozen nonprofits working toward the goal of registering 50,000 Black Tennesseans to vote. The group, under Johnson’s leadership, submitted 91,000 voter registration forms. Johnson refers to herself as a modern day solutionairy, or the bridge that connects the revolutionary mindset of change to equitable solutions that intersect with the values and principles that this great nation was founded upon.

Project Description 

The attack on voting rights, and the blatant voter suppression, is about Black people’s right to be in this country. It’s about limiting self-determination and reserving power for only a few. These are attacks against our very citizenship and this is a major problem that I’m committed to solving. Black Citizenship in Action is a project created by the Black Progressive Action Coalition (BPAC), BlackPAC, and local grassroots organizations across the country. Black Citizenship in Action TN, will include local community outreach and mobilization opportunities and civic and voter engagement trainings that help deepen Black people’s shared understanding of our rights as citizens and helps us build the power we need to create a future that works for us.
